AI democratization is about ensuring that the benefits of AI are accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few. It encompasses:
Democratization of AI Use: Empowering individuals and organizations of all backgrounds to use AI tools and applications.
Democratization of AI Governance: Involving a wide range of stakeholders in the development and implementation of AI policies and regulations
Democratization of AI Development: Enabling a diverse range of people to contribute to the creation of AI technologies.
Democratization of AI Profits: Ensuring that the economic benefits of AI are distributed fairly and equitably.
The East Africa AI Directory (EAAID) is interested in fostering AI democratization in the region by focusing on expanding access to AI use, promoting fair governance, and supporting local AI development. We believe that understanding the AI ecosystem, particularly through the lens of the AI triad (data, algorithms, and computing power), is a crucial precursor to achieving these goals.
As a first step, we're cataloging and highlighting open-source AI resources in East Africa. While we continue to explore ways to empirically measure the state of AI(diffusion) in the region, this initial focus on open-source resources provides a valuable starting point. By making these resources readily available, we aim to empower individuals, organizations, and policymakers with the knowledge and tools they need to participate in and shape the future of AI in East Africa.
We recently discovered this paper that offers a brilliant framework that can help us to empirically measure AI diffusion within the region and we hope to put out a case study on East African countries, soon. The framework looks at Global value chains, research networks and knowledge transfers as a way to measure AI(technology) diffusion in LMICs.
